James A. Thornton

James Thornton is a civil engineer and former president of Nevada Paving Company Inc., which was sold to Granite Construction in 1983. He was president of Nevada Tahoe Company, dba Incline Village Transit Mix, from 1968 to 1986. Mr. Thornton represented Ward 1 on the Reno City Council from 1981 to 1985 and was a member of the Nevada State Department of Transportation Board of Directors from 1989 to 2007. He began his career with Helms Construction, moving to the Nevada Paving Company in 1961.

Mr. Thornton has served as: President of the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada; Chairman of the Washoe County Metropolitan Water Authority; Director and President of the Nevada Chapter of Associated General Contractors; and as a member of the Washoe Country District Board of Health.

He has served as a Director or Trustee of the St. Mary’s Hospital Board of Directors, Reno YMCA, Nevada State Fair, National Championship Air Races, Desert Research Institute Foundation, UNR Wolf Club, Reno National Little League, Greater Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce, Reno Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodge.
